The First Step in the Invention Process

Write your Idea down in an Inventors Notebook or Journal.
Rules for maintaining an Inventors Notebook or Journal

1. The Notebook MUST have a sewn Binding. No loose leaf or spiral bound.

2. All Entries must be in indelible INK, neat and easy to understand.

3. The first entry should read something like:

"I John Doe (insert your name), feel I am the inventor of the following invention, then describe it in easy to understand terms, try to relate it to some existing product."

4. Each major revision MUST be signed and dated by preferably TWO NON-FAMILY members. Have them sign something like I have read or witnessed the above entry and understand how it works. Also get their ADDRESS and PHONE NUMBER

5. You MAY tape receipts, photos, drawings right to the page. Also include notes on all conversations and contacts with whom you have discussed your invention.

6. Each page MUST be numbered.

7. NEVER skip any pages, or try to remove or add pages

8. Do NOT LEAVE BLANK space between entries, draw vertical lines if needed.

9. In case you make an error, simply draw a diagonal line through it, NEVER scribble through it. Initial and date the correction.

10. Keep your journal in a SAVE place.

11. Use one Notebook for EACH idea.

12. Diligence is of MOST importance, you must keep accurate, up-to-date and TIMELY entries. If you work on your idea for a while then take a break for 5 or 6 months, you may very well lose the security offered by the notebook process. Delays in entries in as little as two weeks have proved a lack of diligence.
