DO YOU WANT A HOME BUSINESS...OR A JOB?

Although Many People Long to Start a Home Business of Their Own, They Remain Confused About What That Means.

c2001 by Aaron L. Artis

Last week I received a rather disturbing letter from a potential customer. I had rented a mailing list from a reputable company and mailed the names a copy of my advertiser/newsletter. Well, this prospect decided to write me a two-page letter basically telling me to take him off my mailing list and that he will never pay for any of our "scams." Of course, this wasn't said in those nice terms. Although the letter was quite rude, I understand that he probably just wanted to vent. He had obviously been burned.

But some of his letter had things in it that I would like to comment on. After he voiced his opinion, he went on to say, "Don't get me wrong. I would like to start a home-based business, but I don't have the money. And that's wrong. Home-based businesses shouldn't have start-up fees of any kind."

It looks like this guy was looking for a job, not a home business. Some people are unclear about what it is to have a home business. You call the shots, you make the decisions in a home business. But of course, home businesses do have start-up fees. Whether you buy a starter or dealership package from a company or find your own products to market, there ARE start-up costs. You must advertise your products--there's no way around it. Whether it's through print advertising or direct mail.

Dealership packages or kits can help you by providing you with immediate products to sell until you can find some of your own to sell. I sell a Home Business dealership package to people who want to start their own business. A lot of companies do. Utilize these kits until you can find your own products to market. I not only sell my own products, but I also sell for other dealers, too.

This guy also gave examples of the "home business" he was referring to. "I want to start a home-based business stuffing envelopes or making jewelry," he said. "I wish I could make you people understand I have to have the supplies free of charge."

Now many of mail order's best have written articles upon articles about these types of scams. We've seen them numerous times before. And he wants to start a home-based business doing these types of things? I feel sorry for the guy. I will state again what many others have stated before. No one is going to pay you $2 to $4 to stuff any amount of envelopes from home--honestly. No one is likely to pay you to make jewelry or crafts or anything else of that nature from home. Machines can do it much faster and probably with better quality. They've made their money up front from that "start-up fee."

Too many times dishonest dealers give honest ones a bad name with scams of this sort. Unfortunately, many people get reeled in from this "bait" and have a sour taste in their mouth about mail order afterwards. I like to write on the subject of scams when I can to help the newcomers, but I can't as often as I'd like. But we have our own industry P.I. by the name of Paula Demers. If you'd like information on her Scam Bulletin newsletter, just drop me a first class stamp and I'll send the info right out.

One more note--The guy said that he didn't have any money of any kind for our start-up fees. I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you don't have any money of any kind, NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO START A HOME BUSINESS.

It's time to get a job.
