MAKE YOUR WEB WORK EASIER

Navigating and Downloading Via the Internet Can be a Time-Consuming Headache. But a Few Simple and Free Tools Can Make a Big Difference.

By Curt Berresford

Need help with the Web? Like to save some time? Make your web work easier with some of these handy utilities and services.

GATOR

When you're online, it doesn't take long to accumulate a lot of passwords. Keeping track of them can be a nightmare. A good friend of mine told me about a free password handler called Gator from http://www.gator.com. At only about 325 KB, the download takes almost no time at all and, best of all, it's completely free.

WEBWERX

Some years ago, I began using a great web page creation and editing program called Gomer HTML Editor. But alas, Gomer seems to have fallen off the face of the earth and is no longer available. When someone asked me to recommend an alternative, I went searching and found WebWerx available free from http://www.webwerx.dk

The web text editor let's you work directly in HTML. And you can add images, tables and forms to your web page easily. The color table is even handy for finding HTML color designations to use in other web page creation software. The download is less than one meg.

FTP

To get your web files online, you can't do much better than the top two rated file transfer protocol clients, WS_FTP (lite version), available free from http://www.davecentral.com and CuteFTP from http://www.globalscape.com. Upload or download files, delete files, create directories and check file permissions fast and easily.

NETSCAPE

If you use Internet Explorer as your web browser, you owe it to yourself to try Netscape Communicator, version 4.7 or even better the new beta release version 6.0. Both are free from http://www.home.netscape.com. Available in Windows, Mac and Linux editions, version 6 offers a new look that still incorporates web, email and Usenet features.

But best of all, it also supports the newest HTML protocols. As web sites use more of the newest HTML capabilities, you'll be able to see and enjoy them all. Netscape is now owned by AOL, so you can also count on it to fully support all AOL features, as well.

GOZILLA

If you download many files, you've probably noticed it sometimes takes forever to download even a small file. And who hasn't suffered the indignation of a dropped connection? With GoZilla, available free at http://www.gozilla.com, you can find the fastest download site for any program. And its resume function let's you pick up where you left off if your connection is broken.

CHECKER

If you operate a small or home business, you need to accept payment from customers in ways that are convenient to them. One way is to accept customer checks by phone or fax. I began using Checker software some time ago and liked it so well, I began offering it myself on my web site at http://www.paperdots.com/checks.html.

Checker let's you type in the customer check into and print out an official check acceptable by all banks. While not free, the software is inexpensive and easy to use. It comes with a free supply of official check paper with your order.

WINAMP

When you take a break from work, you may want to enjoy some music from the Web. With so many MP3 files around, it's easy to find free music to pass the time. NullSoft's WinAmp is the most popular sound file player. It's free from http://www.winamp.com and plays a variety of file formats, including music from your CDs and of course, MP3.

Good luck with your business!
