Because mail order and MLM businesses seem to be easy and inexpensive to get started, this is where people with a few hundred dollars to invest will begin. The competition in mail order/MLM is fierce and 95 percent of those who take the plunge into the turbulent waters will bite the dust within their first 90 days in business.

If you're trying to operate a mail order or network marketing business out of your home or apartment, the first reality you need to face is--THE ODDS OF SUCCESS ARE NOT IN YOUR FAVOR. So, what can you do to even the playing field? Let's take a look:
DEAL WITH THE BASICS
Yes, I know this is elementary, however, this is something that most people won't do. Most people will say they don't have time, it's too hard, I don't need to deal with small details but the truth is--most people are just plain LAZY.
If you start by taking the time to learn all that you can about your business area of interest, you will instantly begin to give yourself the leverage you will need to move ahead of the crowd. Learn the basics and make it a practice to keep them fresh in your mind. Never think that you are finished learning. If you do, you could be making a fatal mistake.
FIND A NICHE MARKET
The small-time operator cannot be all things to all people. Don't make the mistake of going out and finding a product or service that you think everyone will want to buy and then find that no one will purchase it from you. Locate your market first. If you are beating your head against the wall trying to figure out why you're not getting any orders, the answer is simple. PEOPLE DON'T WANT WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO SELL. It's that simple. Make things easy for yourself, locate a niche market of people who are hungry for a line of products and give them what they want.
HOW DO YOU FIND A HUNGRY NICHE MARKET?
Where should you start looking for a niche market? The opportunities are all around us every day. Here's an example--The U.S.A. has lately had success in the Word Cup Soccer competition. This has greatly increased the interest of young people in the United States in this sport. Do you think that these young people from the age of 16 to 30 would be interested in some kind of fad product related to soccer? You bet they would!
If you could come up with some hot new product(s) for this growing market, you could find yourself making a lot of money.
Here's another way to find out what people are hungry for. Keep track of books that appear on the best seller list. What are the subjects of some of these books? How many best sellers are written on the same subject or area of interest? This will give you a good idea of what products or information people are looking for.
Take a trip to your main library. Ask for the directory of News Letters in Print. You can choose any subject you like. See how many newsletters are published on that subject. Take notice of how many subscribers each newsletter has. This will give you an idea of the size of the niche market on any subject.
People pay their money to subscribe to a newsletter because they have a special interest in the subject the newsletter covers. The same thing is true of magazine subscribers. Do a little research and then make your choice based on the subject that interests you most. It's important that you have an interest in the subject you choose because it will help you produce or find a top quality product or service to offer to this niche market.
