WHY DO YOU NEED A BUSINESS PLAN?
What's the First Step in Starting Your Own Business? A Business Plan. Here's Why You Need One. By G.H. Bey
Most people who have just started a business, don't have a business plan. Why? Because most of these people don't know that this is one of the first steps that should be taken when considering operating your own business. Others don't feel that there is a need for a business plan just to start a small part-time mail order or network marketing business. Still others don't want to be bothered with creating a business plan because they don't have a clue as to how to go about it.
Not having a business plan is one of the biggest mistakes that the small business owner makes and is one of the main reasons that so many small business operators fail while their business is still in its infancy.
WHY IS A BUSINESS PLAN SO IMPORTANT?
Would you go on a vacation or camping trip without knowing where you're going or how you're going to get there? Would you just pack your bags without making sure that you had everything that you needed to make your trip as successful and comfortable as possible?
The same thing applies when starting a business. You need to know where you're going, how you're going to get there and you need a plan of action that will hopefully help you achieve your goals. You wouldn't build a house without having a blue print and you can't build a successful business without having a business plan.
CREATING A BUSINESS PLAN
Your business plan doesn't have to be some elaborate multi-page document filled with technical language and legal jargon. Your business plan should be unique to your business. You're not trying to impress anyone--you simply want to create a clear, precise plan of action that will help you achieve your goal.
Your business plan should give you an overall picture of how you're going to operate your business. You can begin by stating your overall objectives:
What type of business are you going to operate? How much money do you think it will take to get your business started?
How do you plan to raise the money to get your business rolling?
Will you need to seek any legal advice before starting your business?
What do you plan to sell, who are you going to sell it to and how do you plan to reach your potential customers?
Where do you want to be three months, six months, and one year down the road?
These are just some very basic questions that you'll need to answer in preparing your business plan.
Your business plan doesn't have to be written in stone. You'll have to make changes as your business grows. You must be flexible--as the business climate changes you may have to alter some of your original plans and ideas. Stay informed of changes and new trends that take place in your business area of interest and make changes in your business plan, if you feel it's necessary.
If you're already in business and don't have a business plan, you should seriously consider preparing one. It'll keep you on track and keep you working toward your goals.
