THE 12-HOUR MBA PROGRAM: The Key Concepts and Techniques in a Fraction of the Time Milo Sobel 1993, 231 Pages, 7" by 9" paperback Prentis Hall Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632 Suggested Retail $14.95 Content **** Readability **** Price *** Value ****Mr. Sobel's book is an easy read and the lesson plan is easy to follow. His instructions on how to complete the 12-hour program provide a simple format for those interested in learning MBA skills. Only the uninterrupted one-hour time limit for each lesson may present a problem to those with full-time employment or otherwise busy lives. And for those who manage their own businesses, finding one hour a day can be impossible.
However, studying one hour every other day or even once a week may solve the "time" problem. Be sure to schedule that hour into your normal workday and not use it to catch up on something else. Dedication to completing this 12-hour course is necessary to gain the full benefits it offers.
As Sobel states in the Prologue, "It is the aim of the MBA curriculum to develop the skills necessary to plan and manage the various business disciplines." For small businesses, these skills are usually learned on-the-job. However, the 12-Hour MBA Program will give the small business owner the skills to succeed more quickly. Following this 12-hour plan may even save many small businesses that might otherwise fail when the owner learns the necessary skills too slowly. This is often why second and third businesses succeed while first businesses have an appalling failure rate.
If yours is a large business, you probably already possess the skills you would learn from this book. However, if you're studying (or are about to study) for your MBA, this book will certainly help you grasp the necessary principles and expertise an MBA graduate must learn. Consider it as giving you an edge on the other students.
Chapter nine offers a simple Career Self-Examination which I highly recommend. If possible, take this self-exam before purchasing the book to learn whether you need the skills of an MBA. In addition, the self-examination will show you whether you should take a more formal MBA education in addition to studying with this book.
