A WHISPER, A NOD AND A SONG
Our Fast-Paced Business World is Dominated by Talk That is Both Fast and Loud. But Success Often Requires a Different Approach.

By Gary Christensen

One evening I walked up behind my wife while she was doing the dishes and whispered in her ear, "I love you."

Her reaction to those few words was amazing. Some things NEED to be whispered, not shouted. In our world today, there's so much shouting and so much hype going on, we have forgotten the power of a soft whisper.

A WHISPER

In the world of business, to get the attention of your customer, try talking softer. I'm not suggesting that you try whispering, "I love you" in their ears, but for me, I know that I listen closer whenever someone else speaks softly.

As you talk with your customers about your products, pointing out the benefits of buying from you (which is part of the overall selling process), try something different. Instead of raising your voice, try sharing the information in a lower tone of voice. You'll be surprised at the reaction you get.

A NOD

A business I heard about spoke well of another business--that is considered a nod. For example, a friend in another business might give a nod to MY business. In other words, it's a recommendation...an acknowledgement.

One nod I recently received was printed in another person's newsletter. The editor gave a nod to MY newsletter, which resulted in my receiving a number of new subscribers. This is also known as a "Publisher Mention." It's not something you can order or request--it usually happens even without your knowing about it. But if you're doing things right and your business is growing, people will take notice and they'll pass the word on to others.

A SONG

A song is a good way to disperse information. If you have something like an address to convey and if people are hearing your ads but not responding, maybe your address is too long. Maybe you need to communicate it through a song.

One children's program on TV wants kids to remember and to respond to what they see on their TV show, so they SING their mailing address. I can heart it right now, running through my mind. I don't have to get a pen and write it down. I remember the address because I remember the song.

These are just a few tips I wanted to share with you about the ways you conduct your business. If you speak in a Whisper, you're customers might listen closer and place more orders with you. If you give a Nod to other companies, you might find that others will give a Nod to your business. And if you're having trouble communicating your message, maybe you need to put it into a Song.
