MY BUSINESS IS...PEOPLE

Where Do You Put the Focus in Your Business? If the Focus is Always on YOU, Here Are a Few Ideas to Consider.

By Gary Christensen

What do YOU say when someone asks you, "What do you do?"

I asked that recently of a friend and he said, "My business is helping other people become successful." Wow! What a line! I was immediately intrigued. I wanted to find out what he did to help other people.

If you're trying to make money by selling your products to others, ask yourself...am I the key or are THEY? If your focus is on YOU, and how much money YOU will make, you may end up making LESS money and being LESS successful than anyone else.

That IS what most of us think...if you'll really be honest with yourself. We are really only interested in ourselves and our own betterment. Everybody is the same as you are. Part of being in business is understanding our human nature and the nature of our customers. Try to focus more on the needs of others and less on your own desires and you'll end up having more business than you ever imagined. The key is in helping "the other guy" to realize his dream. Then your own dreams will be realized in the process.

That's what Zig Zigler used to say-- "Help other people to realize their dreams and your own dreams will be realized" or "Help others to become successful and you, also, will become successful in the process."

Don't just sell your products to others. Help others to save money by using your products. If you design websites, don't make your focus "Premiere Websites by Joe." Instead promote your designs as "Websites That Make People Successful." If you sell various How-To Books, market them as "Books that help people to become wealthy."

Your focus shouldn't be on the amount of money YOU will make, but on how many lives you'll touch and help to change for the better. Your products should be the keys to changing lives, not just the means to an end (your own full pockets).

If people understand you are just out to make money, to sell them YOUR products and to make yourself rich, they will not help you on your journey. On the other hand, if you emphasize how your products will enhance and better THEIR lives, people will desire what you're selling and will want to do business with you.

It seems backwards, but it works. Jesus said it, too-- "Think of others as more important than yourselves." When you're dating and you only go where YOU want to go and only do what YOU want to do, your partner will get tired of your constant focus only on you. But if you focus on what your date wants and what THEY want to do and where THEY want to go, your partner will love you.

If you only talk about yourself and what you do, people will get tired of listening to you. But, if you ask questions and get the other person to talk and really listen to them...you'll make life-long friends.

If your customer only hears you talking about YOU and YOUR products, they'll eventually be turned off. Talk about what your customers need, what THEIR goals and desires are, and you'll end up getting more orders than you can handle. Try it. It works!
