CASH IN ON THE HENNA TATTOO CRAZE

Looking For an Opportunity? Consider This Safe and Fun Alternative to Permanent Tattoos.

By David Cotriss

You may have never heard of it before, but the Henna tattoo craze has been sweeping the nation for several years now and continues to grow in popularity each year. What is Henna, you ask? Henna is derived from Mehndi, the intricate Indian art of Henna painting on skin. It is a relatively new and safe type of tattoo that can make you money, even with no prior experience.

Henna tattoos are being used by major celebrities such as Madonna, as well as teens and other tattoo enthusiasts. The teen and college markets are particularly strong. The main appeal is the fact that they only last two to three weeks as opposed to regular (permanent) tattoos. Thus, they provide a great alternative to permanent tattoos and help alleviate parental concerns in the case of teens.

The timing of Henna tattoos couldn't be better considering the fact that the art of permanent tattooing has reached its peak. Henna tattoos have emerged as a safe and fun alternative and a painless one, since Henna tattoos don't cause pain when applied. Since Henna tattoos are all-natural, they are also nontoxic, adding to the safety factor.

Henna is a shrub eight to 15 feet high with small white, yellow, pink, or cream-colored flowers that produces blue-black berries. Thriving in hot and dry climates, Henna is derived from the young leaves of the plant. These leaves have been in use since ancient times in Middle-Eastern and South Asian countries.

Depending on the complexity of the design, application usually takes anywhere from five to 30 minutes, allowing many to be done in a short period of time. Stencils are often used to apply Henna-based paste to the skin in certain shapes. Natural Henna comes in a variety of shades of reddish-brown. Colored Henna paste (such as yellow and blue) contains added color pigment. Nontoxic colored Henna paste should be sought, since there are many different formulations of colored Henna, some of which can be toxic.

A new opportunity has just emerged from colored Henna: black Henna tattoos. An every-increasing number of people are requesting "genuine" black Henna tattoos because they look great and show better than regular colored Hennas. This is particularly true among the teen market. A new, nontoxic black Henna past has just become available and has created a new excitement about the already-popular Henna tattoos. According to Jodie McMillan of Amazing Body Art in Hollywood, California, a company that sells ready-to-use Henna tattoo kits through it web site at www.amazingbodyart.com, "The new black Henna is incredibly popular and is being requested even faster than the popular, regular Henna." McMillan is one of the first people to offer the new black Henna and he sees it as an ongoing, rising trend.

Now that you have some knowledge about Henna tattoos, you may be asking yourself how you can cash in on this craze. After all, the best products and services to sell are ones that people WANT, which is part of why this is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to make a good income. Fortunately, becoming a Henna tattoo "artist" requires no prior knowledge or experience and can make you money from day one.

One of the great things about this opportunity is that you don't need to advertise to generate business. This helps keep the cost of getting started minimal. Decent money can be made at locations that already attract large crowds. Flea markets are one of the best places to offer this service. You can set up a small table with a sign stating something like "Temporary Henna Tattoos, Only $19.95." It's not unusual for lines to quickly form. You can also set up at fairs or similar events. The great thing about these types of locations is that they're normally used on weekends which can make this a "spare time" venture. Hair salons can also offer Henna tattoos to increase business.

Henna tattoos typically sell for $10 to $20 each. Since the average application time is about 15 minutes, many can be done in a short amount of time, which adds up to a good part-time (or even full-time) income. Of course, it helps even more if you're one of the few to offer this service in your area.

To obtain supplies, you can buy the materials separately, but this is a more difficult way to go. The easiest way to get started is to purchase one of the many "ready to use" Henna tattoo kits on the market, such as those offered by Amazing Body Art that allow you to make professional Henna tattoos within 30 minutes. Such kits normally contain the Henna paste, stencils, instructions and all other necessary materials. This takes all the hassles out of getting started and shows you exactly what to do.

Many people have difficulty finding something to sell that makes them money consistently. It's interesting that often the simplest ideas are the best moneymakers. As stated previously, offering something a market WANTS is the most crucial factor in finding an ongoing source of revenue. Hobbies (which can include Henna tattoos) fall into this category. People spend inordinate amounts of money on their hobbies because they love what they're doing and WANT what they're buying. This sort of mentality wins hands-down over coming up with something to sell hoping there's a market for it.

Now that you have some insight into the Henna tattoo craze, you can use that insight to make a good weekend income. The controversy over permanent tattoos has taken a step back thanks to the newer, temporary Hennas. Now when a son or daughter whines about wanting a tattoo they can go the Mehndi route. It's not just teens, though people of all ages are attracted to the safe and temporary alternative to permanent tattoos. It's a fun business to be a part of, and one that shows no signs of letting up for those who choose to cash in.
