CONTACTING MAIL-ORDER COMPANIES

As a Customer, How Can You Be Sure You'll Get What You Want? It's as Simple as Being Specific in Your Request.

By Paula Demers

It's very important when contacting a company that you be specific about what you want. I receive customer mail on a regular basis and quite often, I have no idea what they want.

For example, I'll receive a self-addressed stamped envelope in the mail with nothing else. Sometimes it has a piece of paper that simply says, "Send me your offer." And occasionally, I receive various amounts of cash in the mail with no explanation as to what they want.

People who have been in the industry for a long time have many products and services. We receive a lot of mail. It's almost impossible to figure out what the person wants if the customer doesn't tell us. Being specific about what you want makes it much easier for mail order companies to serve you.

Another common letter I receive requests, "How can I make money?" or "I've been in the business for years and have made nothing. What can I do?"

Remember that mail order is a business, just like any other business. It takes time and perseverance to build any business. It doesn't happen overnight and can't be answered in one letter. And people expect to receive such information for nothing. Most of my business is information--information that I've spent much time researching, evaluating and trying various things. I don't belong to just one "program" that has made me successful. There is no pat answer for success.

As a result, it's wrong to expect a company to send information they have painstakingly got through trial and error for nothing. Chances are, if the company is successful, they do have some type of information reports or books that they've written. Instead of writing companies and asking them to tell you how to make money, write and ask them if they have information you can purchase to help you succeed. Send a self-addressed envelope asking if they have a book or report you can purchase.

Does this sound selfish? Maybe. But the reason people succeed in the business is because they are paid for what they do. They get paid for the time and effort they put into their products and services. Look at it this way--would you go to work for someone for eight hours a day and not expect to get paid? Then don't expect mail order companies to work and not get paid.

When you succeed in the industry, you'll feel the same way. You'll want people to be specific about what they want. And you'll want to get paid for your efforts. Start today by offering that same consideration to others.
