LEMONADE STANDS
Kids Have Always Loved Making Stands and Selling Lemonade. But Do Lemonade Stands Work Today?
By Bonnie Drew
Kids still love to have lemonade stands. They may not earn much money, however, unless the kids can come up with a new idea. Here are a few ideas to help make a lemonade stand successful.
1. New Ideas Work--Expanding the concept of a lemonade stand can make a difference. One youngster set up her stand on the edge of a golf course near her home. She made good money selling lemonade, ice tea and used golf balls during golf tournaments.
2. Golfers Pay Well--Some kids report that they've made up to $35 a day selling canned drinks and lemonade to thirsty golfers. They set up an ice chest near a fence and get extra tips for chasing balls that fly over the fence.
3. Vary Prices--Experiment with prices in your area. Some young entrepreneurs sell the lemonade for as little as five cents a glass. However, others charge as much as 50 cents or three glass for $1.00.
4. Sell More on Hot Days--Warm weather is always best for selling cold drinks. On a hot day, customers will often buy more than one glass at a time.
5. Other Things Sell, Too--Many kids have branched out, selling other items in addition to lemonade--Koolaid, popsicles, cookies, crafts, buttons and homemade art work. Let your imagination run wild.
6. Make an Official Business--When he was 13, Brian Zimmerman set up a portable barbecue pit in the parking lot of his grandmother's grocery store. He cooked and sold hamburgers and the following year, obtained a health department permit to become an official business. He eventually sold the burgers out of a bright red trailer.
With summer on the way, now would be a great time to begin planning a cold drink and food stand in an area near you.
