What sort of people read the Dream Merchant?
Creative people. Idea people. People who would rather be in a workshop than anywhere else. Idealistic people, who have ideas that will change the world in a positive way. Independent people who would rather work for themselves than for others. Optimistic people who still believe an individual can make a difference in the world.
Do any of these describe you? If so, you're a typical Dream Merchant reader, just the type of person we've been speaking to for the past eleven years. And we salute you. If anything, the world needs more people just like you to build hope and maintain the creative spirit.
But remember--there are many of you out there. Millions of people have great ideas and the desire to nurture them. That's why we continue to advise you to protect your ideas at every stage of development. This issue's feature outlines your first line of defense--the Invention Notebook, which assists you in establishing an invention date and a pattern of work on an idea.
There is, perhaps, nothing sadder than an idea or product lost to another who has kept better records. Such a tragedy goes beyond lost money, work and wasted effort. Our ideas are often like children to us and the emotional loss can be truly devastating.
If another truly "beats you to the punch" by working on the idea sooner, that's out of your control. Shake it off and move on. But when you lose an idea simply because you haven't documented your progress, it can be particularly heartbreaking. Don't allow that to happen. Begin an invention notebook today. Follow the guidelines in our feature and approach your work with new peace of mind. You'll be glad you did.
Best of luck with your great ideas.
