By Leon Johnson

Ask any experienced online marketer and you'll hear the same thing--Successful Internet marketing demands the use of MANY marketing tools, not just a simple web site. What are these tools? Let's take a look:

1. Classified Ads--Place ads for your catalogs, products, etc. There are thousands of places to do this, such as Prodigy, CompuServe, America Online, Website Malls, newsgroups, e-mail newsletters and more. On the Internet, it helps to offer something free in your ad like a catalog, a report or newsletter to get your prospect's attention.

2. Web Site Storefront--The World Wide Web is the graphical, multimedia part of the Internet. By owning a Web Site, your customers can get information about your business 24 hours a day at their convenience.

3. Newsgroups--Newsgroups are discussion groups and mailing lists on the Internet. To participate in a newsgroup, you must subscribe first. There are an estimated 15,000 different newsgroups, each with its own culture and rules.

4. Email Marketing--With all the catalogs and offers you get every day in your mailbox, you can build a house list of customer's and their email addresses. Use this database to send messages to your customers in minutes at virtually no expense. Send a newsletter, a press release about a new product or other announcement.

5. Signature File--A signature is a short message that you attach to the end of every outgoing e-mail you send. It says who you are, what you do and how to contact you, including your business name, phone number, email address, web site address and a quick marketing messages.

6. Press Releases--Press releases printed offline in newspapers and magazines can also be posted in classified ads online, in Web magazines, newsgroups and archives.

7. Web Site URL/Email Tags--Increase public awareness and online traffic by posting the above information on all pieces of correspondence that leave your offer in print or online. This includes ads, envelopes, email, letterheads, flyers and shipping labels.

8. Publish Articles--Get free publicity by offering to publish articles on web sites, newsletters, and magazines on and offline.

9. Banner Advertising--Banners are colorful rectangle display ads that appear at the top of many web sites and search engine pages. When they're clicked, users are linked directly to your site. Place ads on sites that target the same customer demographics that you do.

10. Reciprocal Web Links--Offer a link on your web site in exchange for a link on someone else's site. Look for sites with similar customer demographics that do not compete directly with you.

11. Auto Responders--These are the email equivalents to fax on demand. Auto responders automatically send an email message, such as product information, sales letter, etc. when they receive email.

12. Direct Mail Postcards--Send inexpensive postcards to your house mailing list or to a targeted list announcing your new Web site or exciting changes to it.

13. Links in Internet Malls--Buy links for your web site in aggressively promoted malls you benefit from the combined mall traffic.

14. Sub Dealer Relationships--Create tremendous cross promotional leverage, allowing other web sites to broaden their product lines with your products. If a sale is generated from their traffic, you agree to fulfill the order and pay the web site owner a referral commission.

The sky is the limit for sales on the Internet and will continue to be so for some time to come. So use your imagination to come up with even more ways to connect with prospects and potential customers.
