THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Operating Your Own Business Can be Rewarding, but Only if You Have a Steady Flow of Interested People. Here are Seven Smashing Ways to Get Tons of Customers.
By Colette Mosley
Having your own business can be one of life's greatest joys. But for your business to succeed, you have to pull in customers the way honey draws bees. Then you need to keep your business running, like a finely-tuned engine. Here's how.
1. The Write Stuff--When you write your sales letters, make sure they tell the readers how they will benefit from your business. Edit your letters with a fine-tooth comb. Misspellings can send up warning signals that say you're inexperienced and lack credibility.
2. Cussin' Customer Cure--Sooner or later, you'll probably run into a nasty customer. What will you do? Well, you could be rude right back or "dis" the customer. But then you'd be on their pitiful level. Since you probably don't like high blood pressure, why not take a calmer approach. Try to resolve the problem with professionalism and a level head. Sometimes this will cool things off. If the customer continues to rant and rave, remove yourself from the scene. It takes a better person to walk away rather than to stay.
3. Network to Make It Work--Have you done any networking? When you do, have in mind a 30-second description of who you are, what you do, and how your business benefits others. Usually this isn't the time to give your sales pitch. You just want to briefly state your business to get as many contacts as possible. Networking is most effective when combined with creative marketing.
4. Bulls-Eye Marketing--For the very best results, know who your customers are and what they want. Now this may be different from what you have in mind. But customers only buy what they want. So give it to them.
5. Free Publicity--Most people want to promote their business without spending an arm and a leg. These days, it's easy to get free publicity. When used correctly, you can tell thousands, if not millions about your product or service. Effective techniques include distributing press releases, joint ventures, online newsletters, and more.
6. Stop the P Word--And you know what it is--PROCRASTINATION. You may be the only motivating factor for your business. Over time, you might start putting things on the back burner. Oh, maybe you'll get to those orders tomorrow, and so on. To beat procrastination, keep your work drive and goals alive. Face them with a spirit of determination for completion. Because no work means no business, which means no money.
7. Customer Magnetism--If you really want to pull in the buying customers, give them a good deal for their money. Let's face it, no one wants to throw away their hard-earned money. Besides, ripping off people with cheap products or rotten service is wrong. When people hear your name, first-class is what should come to their minds. Being top-notch is an ongoing goal with Shutter Priority, my own business. A good reputation will spread like wildfire and pull in customers. And remember, if you wouldn't use a product or service, don't expect your customers to use it.
Competition is as thick as fleas these days. To rise above the crowd, apply these seven techniques and use the listed resources. So get moving. A winning business awaits you!
