THE INTERNET SOARS WHILE NO ONE NOTICES

Wall Street May Be Having a Hard Time With the Internet, But Regular People Everywhere Still Love It.

By Kevin Nunley

Each day, I walk past the newspaper machines near my office and see headlines about how the Internet is awful for business. Major companies continue to lay workers off and many of the Silicon Valley startups have gone bust.

What the headlines aren't telling you is this--while Wall Street may be having a hard time with the Web, regular people love it. In fact, since 1998 (during the tech boom), the number of people using the Internet has more than TRIPLED. Not only that, but an increasingly large percentage of folks are now perfectly comfortable ordering online.

Meanwhile, the web sites that are sticking to their game plan are finding their competitors giving up and going away. When I think about all this, I get so excited I can hardly sleep at night. Is there money to be made online? YOU BET!

But don't expect sales to fall in your lap like they did in the late 1990s. You'll have to work for each sale you get. But there is plenty of money to be made--and no one is talking about it.

And while we're talking about the Web and your website, you should remember that a picture tells a thousand words. And nothing sells a product like a good photo of it.

In the "old" days, you had to spend big bucks on getting brochures, flyers, and postcards complete with full color photos. You may still want to do that, but you can save lots of money by putting your product photos on a web site.

Pay attention to the quality of the photography. You don't need a high resolution picture to sell a desk. But try to sell food with grainy, off-color photos and you're in trouble. These days scanners are dirt cheap. Scan your own photos, then edit and polish them with a program like Photoshop (see the cheaper Photoshop LE) or PaintShop.

Recently, I needed some photos for my website but didn't have a scanner or a digital camera. I took the pictures with a regular camera, then sent the film to ShutterFly.com where they developed them, digitally edited them, and put them online. All I had to do was grab the photos off the site and put them on mine.
