SHOULD YOUR BIZ BE ONLINE?

Are You a Local Business With Clients in and Around Your Hometown? There Are Still Good Reasons to Have an Internet Website.

By Kevin Nunley

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal said that businesses are in a panic to get on the Internet. Owners feel that unless they get an e-commerce site they will miss out on future sales. In fact, many business people believe that they won't even be in business a few years from not if they don't get their products and services online.

When you look closely at today's market, there's probably some truth to this. Even if your product or service is only sold to folks in your town, quite a few will be looking for you on the Internet. I often search the Internet for local stores before I'll open the Yellow Pages.

At the very least, you should list your contact information on a local Internet mall. Also consider designing your own simple site on a free space like Tripod.com or Xoom.com. If you do any kind of mail order or catalog sales, you simply must be on the Internet. The cost of catalog e-commerce sites is really beginning to come down and you can easily build your own web catalog with the free and low-cost programs at IOManager.com.

Once you're online, consider using Pay-per-Click search engines--the ones that let you pay a small fee for each visitor who clicks to your site. Such search engines have seen big increases in the number of people who use them.

I noticed this recently when one of our new sites went from no visitors to hundreds of hits per day. We traced the crowd of visitors back to a very cheap ad we had placed on NetFlip, a pay-per-click started a few years ago by college students.

The downturn in Internet ad rates has kept prices low for these services. That's good news for you. So why not give the pay-per-clicks a try? They are suddenly one of the most powerful, low-cost promotional tools on the Net.
