An Interview with Talk Show Expert Joe Shafran
"Sure, you can be on a TV talk show," beams Joe Shafran. "It's all a matter of knowing what talk show producers are looking for and how to get in touch with them."
Shafran is a veteran public relations expert who has placed hundreds of authors, business leaders, government officials, experts and everyday people on every big-name talk show. Now Shafran's candid advice to wanna-be guests is featured on his new web site at www.PR4U.com.
"Number one on the talk show producer's list," says Shafran, "is a need for a guest who has self-confidence and can interact with others."
Next, producers look for guests with a decent screen appearance or a pleasing voice that projects well. Talk shows also like guests who have watched or listened to the show and know what to expect. Producers favor guests who have a connection with a topic that's in the news.
"People who have written books on popular subjects are a virtual shoo-in," Says Shafran.
What are the chances of getting on a talk show? Extremely good when you consider that there are 3,368 national and local radio and television talk shows on the air every day in the U.S. (another 2,339 if you include Canada and other English-speaking countries). Shafran keeps tabs on these shows along with what kinds of guests and topics they're booking. He works with clients to help them get on talk shows and look and sound good when they're on the air.
"Keep a few things in mind when you contact a talk show. Producers have their pet peeves," Shafran warns. "Don't call five minutes before air time to see if they received your packet."
In addition, make sure the recording on your answering machine sounds coherent. It's good to practice a short spiel that you can deliver should a producer call to test your knowledge in a qualifying pre-interview. People who can answer questions easily at a moment's notice get top priority.
