DEVELOP A WINNING BUSINESS ATTITUDE

There Are Plenty of People Who Will Share Success "Secrets," but Maybe it's Time to Stop All That and Return to the Basics....Attitude.

By Jeanie Swisher

Failure is not an option. You must "expect" to succeed. The kind of success you'll have throughout life will hinge on your attitude. Create an "attitude of success" and you'll BE a success. It's as simple as that.

HAVE A SPECIFIC GOAL

Most businesses have more motives behind them than just "income." These may include the challenge of building your own business, freedom to choose your own hours of work, and protection from being out of a job through corporate downsizing, just to name a few. It's well worthwhile to think about and write out your goal for the future.

WRITE DOWN YOUR PLAN

My plan was to be respected in the community, control my income and be the "boss." My first sale in that business was $2. Today, that business has earned me more than a half-million dollars.

My original plan for advertising my business has changed. Many ads just didn't pay for themselves. My business location in the original plan changed when a better location became available. Employees have come and gone. But today I'm the boss, I control my income and I bask in community respect.

DEVELOP A PLAN TO SUCCEED

This is the hard part. One of the most reiterated comments about being in your own business is, "I have changed my products many times." This is healthy. The two founders of the Amway corporation floundered for 20 years until the successful corporation that we know today came into existence. It takes courage to throw out a bad product and replace it with one that has the "possible" chance to be a good seller.

Make a plan, but don't be afraid to change your plan. Be it once a year or every five years, evaluating your business success makes for a winning attitude. The frustration of continually marketing a product that doesn't sell will beat you down in the long run. A tree that can't bend will break. Let go of a loser.

DECIDE WHAT PRICE YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY

Most people can stay motivated for two or three months. Some can stay motivated for two or three years. With a winning attitude, you will stay motivated for as long as it takes.

Choose co-workers and partners with positive attitudes and goals. Shop for the best and brightest. One negative apple in your barrel can spoil the whole group. Stick with "winners" who will "bang the bushes" to succeed. Winners are easy to spot. They meet you with their hand out and a big smile on their face. Don't pay the price of trying to run a business on four flat tires--even one flat tire is one too many.

THINK ABOUT REACHING YOUR GOAL EVERY DAY

Give yourself the "winner's edge." You need to stay motivated to succeed. Find a motivated mentor or a supportive friend/family member. Read motivational books or listen to tapes that will keep you "pumped up." Expect to succeed. Develop a positive, happy, confident attitude about yourself and your business.
