THE HOAX OF INTERNET NEWSLETTERS Have the Once-Proud Internet Newsletters Evolved into Glorified Ad Sheets?
By Jeanie Swisher
Everyone has one. The marketing gurus say the only way to succeed on the Internet is to get one. In fact, you can get one anywhere. I'm talking about Internet Newsletters. But the question remains. Does anyone read them?
One new ezine boasted 4,000 subscribers after just four weeks. Today that newsletter has reached beyond 40,000 online subscriptions. It's a good thing--the public demands the latest information and with electronic newsletters, publishers can fill those needs almost instantly.
One of the greatest challenges of Internet marketing is to seduce the prospects into giving up their email address. And, one of the most effective ways to get the address is to offer a free newsletter. It takes only seconds to subscribe and the company now has a hook in you for future advertising of their products.
Just about every website has some sort of free newsletter to get you to leave your email address. Your local TV station, your doctor, town council, pharmacy, and your attorney, to name a few. Keeping the public up to speed with the latest information is a service we all appreciate. But beware-- they have an agenda, too.
Newsletters have come into a strong market share in the publishing industry. Inter-organization "news" can be shared conveniently and inexpensively. And with the ease of email and the new era of instant information, it's really easy to fire off a newsletter. But, have these publications slipped into being glorified ad sheets?
The results of my recent newsletter research left me in dismay. One well-known electronic newsletter printed out to be six and a half pages of classified ads. Buried within were two short articles hidden in the eight pages of text.
Will the newsletter ad sheets survive? Statistics bear out that when a product doesn't meet the public demands for quality, it will disappear. If it's ads you want, there are plenty of them around. But if you don't have valuable time to waste struggling to find articles of value, simply "delete" the glorified ad sheets.
Demand the best from your electronic newsletter publishers.
